Italian earthquake reconstruction of religious heritage

Overview

Restoration efforts are continuing across various religious sites in Italy to repair structural damage caused by seismic activity in 2016 and 2017.

In Montegallo, work is underway at the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in the hamlet of Castro. The project, supported by 750,000 euros in total contributions, aims to fix damage to the bell tower, facade, internal walls, and roofs. Extraordinary Commissioner Guido Castelli stated that the recovery is vital for safety and the protection of historical-religious heritage.

In Montelparo, the Church of Santa Maria in Camurano has officially reopened following repairs funded by a 340,000 euro reconstruction ordinance. The work addressed masonry damage, the triumphal arch, the apse, and roof infiltration. Commissioner Castelli noted that the reopening is a concrete result of reconstruction efforts, providing the community with a space for faith and social identity.
