Overview

The Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) has engaged in both international humanitarian relief and internal administrative planning. In late August, the CEI allocated 500,000 euros from the ‘8xmille’ funds to support humanitarian emergencies in Colombia, Peru, Indonesia, and Nepal. This aid, distributed via Caritas Italiana, specifically addressed the aftermath of a 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Flores island in Indonesia and a violent event in Nepal’s Rasuwa district that left thousands homeless. By mid-September, the focus shifted to the CEI’s internal governance. The Permanent Episcopal Council scheduled an autumn session in Rome to prepare for a meeting between Italian clergy and Pope Leo XIV, elect members to various commissions, and discuss upcoming religious assemblies and congresses.

Pope Leo XIV has expanded his upcoming apostolic itinerary to include France, Uruguay, and Argentina. His visit to France, scheduled for September 25 to 28, will include Paris, Saint-Denis, Lourdes, and Metz. The itinerary features a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace, discussions at UNESCO regarding culture and artificial intelligence, and a private meeting with victims of sexual violence in Lourdes. To mark his arrival, church bells across France are set to ring for seven minutes on September 25.

Following his French visit, the Pope will travel to South America. He is scheduled to visit Uruguay from November 6 to 8, following an ad limina meeting on September 18 where Uruguayan bishops presented documents detailing the “dreams, hopes, and concerns of citizens.” The Pope subsequently announced an additional visit to Argentina from November 8 to 11, covering Buenos Aires, Luján, and Córdoba. In preparation, the Argentine Episcopal Conference has opened volunteer registrations. Additionally, labor leaders from the CGT recently met with the Pope in the Vatican to discuss social concerns such as employment and retirement.
