Italian jazz festival circuit
Overview
In summer 2024, Italy launched a nationwide jazz programme coordinated by the ANSJ, spanning venues from Torino to Palermo. Highlights included the ANSJ Jazz School in Torino, the “Karma Jazz 7-tet” in Asti, and the Orchestra Jazz Siciliana in Palermo. On 7 August 2024, the Luigi Martinale Quartet performed in Legnano as part of the JAZZaltro festival, presenting a musical interpretation of Italo Calvino’s novel *Invisible Cities* alongside the Chamber Orchestra of the Conservatorio Ghedini di Cuneo.
Two years later, the 2026 season featured several major festivals. The Beat Onto Jazz Festival opened its 25th edition on 31 July in Piazza Cattedrale with the Aaron Goldberg Trio, followed by the Nuovo Trio Accord’s tribute to Astor Piazzolla. The festival concluded on 4 August with Pino Minafra’s “La Banda,” a project reviving southern Italian musical heritage and honoring the centenary of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
The Festival LeAltreNote continued the northern Italian circuit. On 4 August, the Collegiata di San Lorenzo in Chiavenna hosted “La vie en blue,” a Gershwin and Édith Piaf tribute featuring vocalist Sara Jane Ghiotti and the Gershwin Quintet. On 5 August, the “FunFare” concert in Livigno presented works by John Williams, George Gershwin, and Ennio Morricone. On 7 August, Legnano’s Jazzaltro series staged “Le città invisibili,” a jazz-classical adaptation of Calvino’s work by the Luigi Martinale Quartet.
Other summer series included the “Fuori dal guscio” festival in Civitanova, featuring the Nico Gori Youth Trio, and the “Tuscia in jazz for Sla” festival in Sutri, which presented “Cinema Italia” with saxophonist Rosario Giuliani and accordionist Luciano Biondini performing Morricone and Nino Rota scores.
