Italian junior cycling doping case

Overview

Provisional suspensions were announced in April 2026 for former professional cyclist Danilo Napolitano and Salus Seregno club president Marco Moretto after allegations of possession, administration and complicity in doping violations. In late July the Italian anti‑doping tribunal issued the final penalties: Napolitano received a 20‑year ban for breaches of WADA code articles 2.6 and 2.8, while Moretto was banned for eight years for complicity (article 2.9) and evidence‑burden violations (article 3.1). The sanctions were posted on the Italian Cycling Federation’s website on 27 July, with no comment from the coach, the club president or Salus Seregno. The bans run until 2034‑2046, reflecting the federation’s strict stance on doping in youth sport.

The case involved the junior development team Salus Ciclistica Seregno ASD. A lifetime ban had been considered during the provisional period. Napolitano, a former sprinter who won a stage of the 2007 Giro d’Italia and rode for teams such as Lampre, Katusha and Wanty‑Gobert before retiring in 2017, was found to have possessed and administered prohibited substances to a minor athlete. The Italian Cycling Federation upheld the decisions, and the sanctions underscore the ongoing fight against doping and the responsibility of senior officials to protect young athletes.
