Italian medical school admission reform
Overview
Italian universities have implemented a new academic admission model known as the ‘filter semester’ for medical and dental degree programmes. This system requires prospective students to undergo examinations in core subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics to secure definitive enrollment.
In July, registration opened for this pathway, with teaching scheduled to begin on 1 September. The results from these exams contribute to a national ranking used to determine admission to the second semester of the degree courses. A draft law has been proposed to extend this system to non-state universities, potentially starting in the 2027-28 academic year, in an effort to harmonise access between public and private institutions.
By August, the University of Palermo confirmed the commencement of the second edition of this filter semester for Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine, following the receipt of 2,223 applications. Classes are set to run from September through late November, with the first exam session results expected in late December.
