Italian municipal waste‑recovery projects

In late July 2026 two Italian cities launched distinct community‑focused waste initiatives. Sassuolo’s municipality inaugurated the “Arnia – La Dispensa del Distretto” hub, a partnership with AVIS Sassuolo and the non‑profit Associazione Il Melograno. The hub diverts edible food surpluses from companies and retailers, redistributing the recovered products to charities, schools, sports clubs and donors after blood or plasma donation. Funding comes from the city, which seeks further collaborations with local social‑service entities.

A day later, Bari’s city government, the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari and waste‑management firm Amiu Puglia signed a three‑year protocol to turn ordinary recycling containers into public artworks designed by students. The project aims to raise environmental awareness and improve public spaces. In parallel, Bari’s Metropolitan City signed the “Accordi di Legalità” pact, allocating €100 000 to establish territorial legal presences, manage confiscated assets, train local administrators and involve young citizens in anti‑crime and transparency activities. Both initiatives reflect a broader push by Italian municipalities to combine waste management with community engagement and social benefit.
