Italian pharmacy labor and role evolution

Overview

The Italian pharmacy sector is undergoing a transition as facilities evolve from traditional medicine dispensaries into local healthcare hubs providing vaccinations, screenings, and telemedicine.

In response to this expansion of responsibilities, the Fisascat Cisl union raised concerns regarding the need for professional recognition, adequate compensation, and sufficient staffing to prevent burnout. The union also noted a shift from family-run pharmacies toward centrally managed corporate structures.

Following these discussions, a new National Collective Labor Contract (Ccnl) was signed on September 15 between Assofarm and the unions Filcams Cgil, Fisascat Cisl, and Uiltucs. Valid until December 31, 2029, the agreement includes inflation adjustments, a monthly salary increase of 220 Euro for level 1 pharmacists, and a new 30 Euro monthly professional indemnity. The Federation of Pharmacists' Orders (Fofi) stated the agreement supports the profession’s evolution toward health promotion and chronic patient management.
