Italian polar research and climate studies

Overview

In October 2026, the First National Polar Conference concluded in Rome at the National Research Council (CNR) headquarters. The event involved over 200 participants and 15 senior coordinators discussing scientific priorities for the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Third Pole. The goal of these discussions is to produce a White Paper to serve as a strategic tool for Italian policy-making and climate change adaptation.

Following the conference, the CNR highlighted the role of polar regions as global climate regulators through media coverage. In a broadcast on the program MarcopoloTv, Giuliana Panieri, director of the CNR Institute of Polar Sciences, emphasized that changes in the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Himalayan Third Pole directly impact the global future. The conference was noted as a collaborative effort involving the CNR, ENEA, INGV, and OGS.

Reports also included field operations from the Dirigibile Italia Arctic Base in the Svalbard islands, Norway. Researcher Chiara Ripa discussed ongoing activities, including atmospheric and marine monitoring and snow cover studies.
