Italian police evictions of illegal occupants

In early July, police in Casale Monferrato resolved an illegal occupation and secured an unsafe building without using force. By early August, municipal police in Modena and Viareggio carried out coordinated operations to clear abandoned structures, removing occupants, sealing the sites, and planning future uses to curb urban decay.

On 3 August, Modena’s local police executed a further coordinated eviction on Via Agnini, clearing two abandoned properties – a former municipal nursery and an adjacent Acer building. Officers arrested three occupants, one of whom had forced a window and lived on makeshift mattresses; the others resisted, threatened staff and attempted self‑harm before being taken into custody. The sites were secured, damaged access points repaired, and authorities announced stronger closure measures under the city’s “Safe City” programme to prevent future invasions. The actions continue to illustrate a non‑violent, systematic approach by Italian authorities to combat illegal squatting.
