Italian political stances on Ukraine conflict

Political discourse in Italy regarding the war in Ukraine has focused on internal consensus and the government’s diplomatic positioning.

Nicola Fratoianni, secretary of Sinistra Italiana, has called for the Italian opposition to find common ground on Ukraine policy. While noting that parties like the Democratic Party (PD) and the Five Star Movement (M5S) share views on the criminality of the Russian invasion, he highlighted the need to reconcile differing perspectives on the specific methods of military aid.

Concurrently, the Italian government has signaled a preference for diplomacy. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini described the state’s position as “equilibrated” rather than strictly aligned with one side, expressing a desire to restore diplomacy to end the conflict and criticizing attacks on non-combatants.

In September 2026, the Remind Association hosted the fourth edition of ‘Il Coraggio della Pace’ in Rome. The event convened representatives from European institutions, the armed forces, the church, and the private sector to discuss peacebuilding. Remind President Paolo Crisafi characterized peace as a ‘civil infrastructure of the Nation,’ requiring security, justice, and trust in institutions. Antonella Sberna, Vice President of the European Parliament, added that peace necessitates the courage to engage with differing perspectives. During this period, Salvini reiterated to the Russian news agency TASS that the Italian government maintains its “equilibrated” stance, focused on returning to diplomacy to end the war's suffering.
