Italian post-earthquake reconstruction investigation

Overview

An investigation known as ‘Operation Ricostruzione,’ coordinated by the Ancona District Anti-Mafia Directorate, has targeted alleged illegalities in public contracts and construction sites related to post-earthquake reconstruction efforts.

Initially, Enrico Crucianelli, president of Ance Macerata and a member of the Confindustria Macerata presidency council, suspended himself from all associative roles following his involvement in the probe. Authorities requested precautionary measures for 51 suspects and seized assets exceeding 57 million euros. Crucianelli, owner of Rest Edile, faced accusations of managing approximately 400 construction sites with an insufficient workforce to allegedly achieve a monopolistic position through systematic subcontracting.

Following the arrest of Crucianelli and seven others, Crucianelli resigned irrevocably. Luca Mira has been appointed as the sole administrator of Crucianelli Rest Edile. The company, which manages approximately 90 construction sites including local public works, stated that its priorities are to protect employees and ensure stability for clients and suppliers. While the investigation has caused local concern, legal representatives noted that company shares have not been seized and no judicial administrator has been appointed.
