Italian professional cycling governance overhaul

Overview

In July 2026 the Federal Council of the Italian Cycling Federation moved to place the Professional Cycling League under external oversight after repeated serious breaches of federation rules and a 2024 convention. The council appointed Carabinieri General Mauro Capone as an extraordinary commissioner to enforce compliance and drive reforms.

The intervention, formalised on 20 July, was triggered by a dispute over the league’s handling of women’s race television rights, which had been transferred to Rai in 2023 without a proper statute. After the federation suspended the agreement and audited the league’s accounts, the league failed to respond to a summons, prompting the government‑appointed commissioner to assume management. The move also referenced earlier periods of commissariamento under former league president Roberto Pella. The overarching goal is to restore governance standards, resolve the broadcasting‑rights conflict, and ensure financial transparency within Italian professional cycling.
