Italian rail freight network expansion continues

Entities: Terminali Italia · FS Logistix · Sabrina De Filippis · Orte · Rome

Overview

In mid‑July 2026 Italy launched a dedicated automotive rail corridor linking the port of Livorno, the GTA yard at Il Faldo, the Automar hub in Pontecagnano and the terminal at Gioia Tauro. Operated by Mercitalia Rail under a joint venture that includes Automar, FS Logistix, GTA and the ALIS logistics association, the round‑trip service aims to shift vehicle freight from road to rail, ease driver shortages, cut empty runs and reduce annual CO₂ emissions by roughly 4,800 tonnes while shortening vessel dwell time at Gioia Tauro.

From January 2027 FS Logistix subsidiary Terminali Italia will manage the newly built 96 000 m² Terminal Intermodale di Orte. The hub, situated at the junction of the Rome‑Florence, Orte‑Falconara and Scandinavian‑Mediterranean lines and adjacent to the A1 motorway, adds a third intermodal track, gantry cranes and dedicated locomotives, raising FS Logistix’s directly managed European network to 23 hubs. It will serve the Rome metropolitan area, the port of Civitavecchia and key industrial districts such as Terni, Narni, Civita Castellana and the Tuscia agri‑food sector.

In parallel, the previously idle Welcome Terminal at the port of Marsala in Sicily has been re‑opened under a free‑use agreement with Liberty Lines. Funded by a €450,000 POR Sicilia grant, the terminal now offers daily passenger facilities, improving tourist and commuter links to the Egadi Islands.
