Italian railway infrastructure maintenance and service resun
Overview
Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has resumed train services across several Italian rail lines following extensive infrastructure maintenance and upgrades conducted during August.
In mid-August, service returned to the high-speed line between Bologna and Milan after the replacement of six large switches at Livraga and Piacenza Ovest. Additionally, service was reactivated on the Verona Porta Nuova–Vicenza and Vicenza–Schio lines as part of the Verona–Vicenza high-speed/high-capacity project. By the end of the month, rail traffic resumed on the entire Bologna–Porretta line following track renewal, tunnel work, and station improvements.
Following a 31-day planned suspension in August, railway service has also resumed between Roma Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense. This stoppage facilitated a major construction phase for the new Pigneto station, part of the ‘Pigneto Interchange Hub’ project involving an investment of approximately 230 million euros. Completed works include the installation of a second track for the FL1 and FL3 lines, foundation structures, and progress on a pedestrian underpass connecting the station to Metro C.
Rome’s Mobility Assessor, Eugenio Patané, noted the station will serve as a strategic connection point between rail and metro. While the station is expected to be operational between late 2026 and early 2027, further short-term service interruptions are scheduled from September 19 to 21 to accommodate technological installations and finishing works.
