Italian railway station safety disputes

In late July 2026, the Giulianova railway station in the Abruzzo region drew attention after a homeless individual repeatedly entered the plaza, drank alcohol despite a ban and threatened bar owner Gianluca Grimi, who also leads the local merchants’ association. Police interventions by the Railway Police and the Carabinieri were required multiple times, and Grimi filed a criminal complaint urging stronger security measures.

On 27 July, the tension resurfaced when Grimi reported direct threats from the same individual. The Carabinieri forwarded a detailed report to the local prosecutor and merchants pressed for structural security upgrades, noting that the bar had previously been forced to close during certain hours for staff safety.

By early August, the focus broadened to a wider civic backlash against perceived safety shortcomings and operational changes at railway stations. In Guidonia Montecelio, a citizen committee headed by former Five Star Movement candidate Giuseppe Siragusa prepared legal action to contest the closure of the historic Guidonia Centro station and the introduction of paid parking at the new Collefiorito station. Simultaneously, Giulianova residents, commuters and businesses called for cleaner surroundings, better upkeep and a stronger security presence at their station, emphasizing its importance as a regional gateway.

On 8 August, an assault at the Ponte San Giovanni station in Umbria heightened concerns. A traveler forced open a movement‑office door and attacked three station managers. The FIT Cisl Umbria union condemned the incident, demanded a meeting with Ferrovie dello Stato and the regional Prefecture, and called for night closures of stations without commercial service and an increased police presence. While FS announced a new security post, the union warned that without adequate police support the measure would have limited preventive effect.
