Italian school year commencement and local initiatives

Educational institutions across various Italian regions have commenced the new academic year, marked by diverse local celebrations, community initiatives, and administrative adjustments due to weather conditions.

Extreme heatwaves have necessitated specific management strategies in several municipalities to protect student and staff health. In San Lucido, Mayor Cosimo De Tommaso postponed school openings until September 21 because of a lack of adequate air conditioning in older buildings. In Polistena, Mayor Michele Tripodi implemented reduced hours during the first week of classes to avoid peak afternoon temperatures. Similar preventative measures were noted in Cagliari, where the Ugo Foscolo Institute began classes ahead of the regional schedule.

Community-led initiatives continue to support the transition. In Monza, the eight-year tradition of AC Monza and the local municipality distributing stationery kits continued, providing 1,025 kits to primary students. In Pisa, the local government celebrated the reopening of nursery schools with welcome festivals and announced investments in disability support and summer service extensions.

As the 2026/2027 academic year begins, schools are utilizing community-focused welcome activities. In Casagiove, the Moro-Pascoli Institute held a ceremony attended by Mayor Francesco Moscatiello, who presented an olive tree to the school to symbolize commitment to youth welfare. Director Angela Maccauro emphasized the necessity of cooperation between schools, families, and local institutions. In Catania, the Boggio Lera state high school organized a two-day welcome event at the Le Capannine sports village. Director Valeria Pappalardo noted that activities such as beach volleyball and team-building exercises serve as educational tools to foster respect and responsibility.

In Basilicata, approximately 64,000 students are returning to classrooms, with regional President Vito Bardi emphasizing the school’s role in social growth. Amidst these transitions, recent OECD-PISA data shows Italian students exceeding international averages in reading and outperforming countries like France, Germany, and the United States in mathematics.
