Italian tax enforcement and vehicle crime trends

Overview

In late July 2026, Italy’s Guardia di Finanza seized more than €7,500 in cash from a 62-year-old man at the Piattamala border crossing under a temporary cash-seizure rule aimed at curbing tax evasion.

Following this, Naples police from the NISA unit seized a stolen Fiat 500X in Portici that bore a falsified Polish licence plate and a forged chassis. The driver, a repeat offender from the Barra district, was referred to judicial authorities on a money-laundering charge. On 3 August, the same Fiat 500X seizure was reiterated and a 70-year-old Naples resident’s vehicle was immobilised after the collection agency Municipia-Abaco uncovered an unpaid regional vehicle tax of €0.36 dating back to 2020, which had risen to approximately €41 with interest and fees. The consumer association Assoutenti Campania announced it will appeal the measure as an “excessive burden.”

Two days later, police highlighted the Fiat 500X case, noting a growing trend of using foreign plates to conceal stolen cars; over 40 stolen vehicles have been recovered in the past nine months. The same report also described a separate car-break-in at the Elite shopping-centre parking lot in Civitavecchia, reminiscent of the “Aquafelix” method.

On 13 August, Carabinieri officers in Gricignano d'Aversa discovered a stolen white Fiat Punto during a patrol of a local Roma camp. Investigations revealed the vehicle had been fitted with cloned license plates belonging to a different Fiat Punto owned by a woman in the Naples area. A 52-year-old man found in possession of the vehicle was charged with receiving stolen goods and money laundering.
