Italian university student financial aid initiatives

In late July 2026, two Italian universities announced new measures aimed at reducing financial barriers for students. The University of Siena introduced a fully funded €12,000 annual scholarship for victims of family violence and a reduced‑fare urban transport pass for students, covering the 2026/2027 academic year. The scheme, financed by the Ministry of University and Research, also includes a concession that sets the student bus pass at €120 for those up to 26 years old and €170 for older students.

Two days later, the University of Florence unveiled a €1 million housing‑cost aid programme for students enrolled in the 2025‑2026 academic year. The aid reimburses rental expenses for off‑campus students whose household income (ISEE) does not exceed €40,000, extending support beyond the national scheme that caps eligibility at €20,000. Applicants must be regular enrollees, within their first year of study, and not already receiving comparable subsidies.

Together, these announcements illustrate a broader trend of Italian higher‑education institutions expanding targeted financial assistance—covering scholarships, transport, and housing—to improve access and equity for vulnerable and low‑income students.
