Overview

The Italian government has introduced several initiatives aimed at promoting cleaner mobility and energy transitions. In late July 2026, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy activated a retrofitting bonus for gasoline or diesel vehicles. In collaboration with the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI), the Ministry launched an experimental pilot program scheduled to run until June 30, 2030. Targeting individuals with an ISEE below 30,000 euros, the initiative requires participants to scrap a Euro 4 vehicle or older that has been owned for at least one year. The program offers new M1 category vehicles meeting Euro 6 standards with CO2 emissions not exceeding 135g/km. For a maximum monthly fee of 100 euros, including VAT, users receive coverage for insurance, maintenance, tires, and roadside assistance. Contracts require a minimum 36-month term with an annual limit of 12,000 kilometers, and users may have the option to purchase the vehicle at a 10% discount on its residual value at the end of the term. Due to high expected demand and limited vehicle availability, the program is expected to operate on a ‘click day’ basis. Rather than using rankings or priority scores, vehicles will be assigned to those who successfully complete an online reservation first. Applications are anticipated to open via an ACI-managed digital platform, potentially between April and May 2027, requiring Spid or Cie credentials.
