Italy expands security force recruitment
Overview
In mid‑July 2026, Italy issued a presidential decree authorising more than 15,000 permanent hires across the Carabinieri, State Police, Guardia di Finanza, Penitentiary Police and the national fire service, alongside three‑year collective agreements that raise salaries for roughly 430,000 non‑officer personnel in the security‑defence sector. The decree also called for a new pension‑design table for uniformed staff. While union representatives welcomed the wage gains, the Siulm Marina federation criticised the pension proposals as insufficient and refused to sign the agreement.
A week later, the Italian Army announced an extension of its public competition for 3,200 Volontario in Ferma Iniziale (VFI) volunteer positions, pushing the deadline to 28 July. The drive targets 18‑24‑year‑olds and includes technical roles, offering a three‑year initial term with pathways to police careers or longer armed‑forces postings.
Expanding these efforts, the Italian Ministry of Defence announced recruitment for 50 cadet officer positions within the Air Force. This includes 20 spots for pilot training via the 133rd Complementary Pilot Officer Cadets course and 30 spots for the 18th Fixed-Term Officer Cadets course, focusing on technical and administrative roles such as the Aeronautical Engineer Corps. Applications for these officer roles are due by 10 September 2026.
Together, these measures illustrate a coordinated effort by the Italian government to broaden and professionalise its internal security and defence personnel through large-scale recruitment and improved employment conditions.
