Italy hydrogen research and regional energy strategies
Overview
Italy is advancing its hydrogen economy through both national research initiatives and regional strategic planning.
At the national level, the POR H2 research and development program, promoted by ENEA in collaboration with CNR and RSE, has concluded. Funded with 120 million euros by the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, the program established a network of expertise covering renewable hydrogen production, storage, e-fuels, and fuel cells. Giulia Monteleone of ENEA noted the program created a strategic asset for the country, with future goals focusing on translating scientific results into industrial competitiveness.
Regionally, the Abruzzo green hydrogen strategy has received scientific validation through a study by the National Research Council (CNR). Published in the journal Energy Policy, the research supports the region’s focus on hydrogen produced from renewable sources as a driver for decarbonization and industrial development. Regional councilor Nicola Campitelli stated the analysis reinforces the region’s pursuit of energy autonomy through low-impact technologies.
