Italy summer holiday safety campaigns

Italy has launched the 27th edition of its nationwide “Vacanze coi Fiocchi” campaign to promote safe and environmentally friendly driving during the summer holiday season. The initiative, coordinated by Centro Antartide, emphasizes “Eco-Driving” to combine road safety with environmental sustainability and economic savings by reducing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions.

This year’s approach promotes sustainable mobility by encouraging driving styles that can reduce fuel consumption by 5 to 20 percent. The Polizia Stradale has issued a safety guide recommending thorough vehicle maintenance, such as verifying tire pressure, tread depth, and the functionality of lights and windshield wipers. Additional guidance includes ensuring proper luggage distribution for vehicle stability, using child safety seats, and securing pets to prevent driver distraction. Drivers are also advised to avoid alcohol and heavy meals before trips.

Local authorities have implemented various enforcement and educational measures. In Arezzo, police are monitoring high traffic volumes, noting that studies indicate nearly one in three vehicles may have safety-related defects such as worn tires. In Parma, officials have urged drivers to avoid distractions and respect speed limits.

In addition to road safety, maritime controls have been intensified, particularly around the Egadi Islands, where the coast guard has issued fines for violations including illegal anchoring and exceeding passenger limits on small vessels.
