Ivory Coast teacher death and educational unrest
Overview
In the Haut-Sassandra region of Ivory Coast, educational activities have been disrupted following the death of teacher Keita Daouda at the Bédiala corridor. Teacher unions report that the deceased was struck by a rope used as a barrier while walking behind a large truck on the Daloa-Bédiala axis.
In response, the Collective of Education-Training Sector Unions in Haut-Sassandra has demanded an investigation into the death, financial support for the teacher’s orphans, and the removal of the Bédiala corridor, which they claim is an illegal barrier.
The Ivorian Minister of National Education, Dr. N’Guessan Koffi, has called for calm and announced that the Ministry has launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances of the incident. The Ministry has also urged the public to avoid comments that could disturb public order.
