Jairam Mahto and Jharkhand police dispute

A dispute has emerged in Jharkhand between Dumri MLA Jairam Mahto and the Barwadda Police Station in-charge, Ravi Kumar. The conflict began following allegations involving the creation of fraudulent certificates using forged seals and signatures. After a JLKM leader was detained for questioning, Mahto and his supporters visited the police station, leading to conflicting reports of chaos, physical altercations, and the obstruction of government work.

The situation escalated when a WhatsApp audio recording of a phone call between Mahto and the police officer went viral. While police allege Mahto used abusive language, Mahto claims the 11-minute conversation was “selectively clipped and potentially altered using artificial intelligence to misrepresent the context.” Mahto has characterized the unauthorized release of the recording as a violation of privacy and has denied allegations of physical altercations, suggesting that CCTV footage would clarify the events.

Jharkhand Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi has criticized the state government and police administration, questioning the legality of circulating private conversations without consent and the standards of decorum applied to public representatives versus police officers.
