Authorities in Jakarta are investigating incidents involving suspicious activities by individuals suspected of being debt collectors, locally known as ‘mata elang’ (hawk eyes).

Initial investigations began after a video surfaced showing two men performing suspicious actions under a parked vehicle at the Gelora Bung Karno area. Police analyzed the footage to determine if criminal acts had occurred, noting the men may have been searching for vehicles with payment arrears.

Following this, police in West Jakarta arrested a debt collector after a separate viral incident on the West Outer Ring Road in Cengkareng. In that instance, a man allegedly forced his way into a moving vehicle, demanded the driver pull over due to unpaid installments, and placed the driver in a neck restraint. Jakarta Barat Metro Police and the Cengkareng Police Criminal Investigation Unit have taken the suspect into custody to investigate the chronology of the event.
