Jake Hager Power Slap eye injury

Overview

Former WWE and AEW wrestler Jake Hager underwent emergency eye surgery following a severe injury sustained during a Power Slap event in Lubbock, Texas, on September 17, 2026. During a match against Johnny Magna, Hager suffered a blow that resulted in significant bleeding and fluid leaking from his eye and face, leading to a technical knockout loss.

UFC and Power Slap President Dana White described the incident as one of the “worst injuries” he has witnessed in the history of his combat sports promotions, noting the injury appeared to involve a ruptured tear duct. Following the procedure, Hager was scheduled to be evaluated by a specialist in Miami to determine his long-term prognosis.

The incident has sparked criticism regarding the safety of the competition. Former wrestler Val Venis labeled the organization “the stupidest game in the world,” arguing that participants face unnecessary risks without the ability to defend themselves. Venis joined other figures, such as Jim Cornette, in criticizing the inherent dangers of the slap-fighting format.
