Jamia Millia Islamia student protests

Students at Jamia Millia Islamia have engaged in multiple protests regarding various administrative and institutional grievances.

In late August, students from groups including the NSUI and SFI protested alleged irregularities in the 2026-27 spot admission process. Demonstrators claimed that offline registrations allowed lower-ranked candidates to bypass higher-ranked applicants. While university officials dismissed these claims as “baseless” and maintained the process was “extremely transparent,” protesters reported being forcibly removed from campus during a sit-in.

By mid-September, protests intensified at the Jammu and Kashmir Girls’ Hostel regarding severe mismanagement of the hostel mess. Students reported finding insects in food and glass fragments in vegetables. Specific grievances included the lack of breakfast, delayed lunch service, and the presence of male staff in the dining area. Students also expressed concerns regarding surveillance, alleging that the requirement to provide personal contact details to receive food could be misused.

Protesters further alleged that the university failed to honor previous agreements, claiming the food contractor was not replaced as promised but was instead operating under a different name. Demonstrators demanded the cancellation of the current vendor’s contract, the deployment of female staff, and the resignation of the Provost and Warden. Following a high-level meeting between university officials and students on September 12, the movement was temporarily suspended after students received fresh assurances.
