Jammu and Kashmir highway disruptions

Overview

Highways in the Jammu and Kashmir region have faced various disruptions due to maintenance, construction, and weather conditions. In early October, the Uri National Highway was scheduled for temporary closures to allow the Border Roads Organisation to perform hill-cutting work under Project BEACON.

By mid-October, broader traffic issues emerged across major routes. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) experienced slow movement caused by uneven surfaces, single-lane stretches, and the movement of nomadic herds. Additionally, daytime restrictions were placed on oil and gas tankers on the Digdol-Khooni Nalla stretch due to widening work and safety protocols regarding inflammable materials in tunnels.

Heavy rainfall also triggered massive landslides, leading to a five-day closure of the Uri-Baramulla highway. This incident coincided with damage to power lines that affected electricity in approximately 50 villages in the Uri area, though the highway has since reopened.
