Sinner and Alcaraz rivalry and coaching developments

Overview

The professional tennis rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz continues to be shaped by coaching shifts and performance predictions.

Speculation has intensified regarding Juan Carlos Ferrero, who left coaching Alcaraz at the end of the 2025 season. Ferrero has addressed rumors regarding a potential future collaboration with Sinner, stating that he has not ruled out working with the Italian player should Sinner part ways with Darren Cahill. Ferrero emphasized that any such move would not be motivated by a desire to spite Alcaraz, noting, “The fact that I coached Carlos does not mean that you cannot coach his main rival. The competitive world works like this.” He added that working with two of the top players of this generation would provide significant personal satisfaction.

While Sinner currently works with Simone Vagnozzi and Cahill, Ferrero has also credited Sinner’s current staff for the player's technical improvements in net play and rhythm changes.

Coach Rick Macci has commented on these developments, suggesting that if Ferrero were to coach Sinner, it might provide Alcaraz with additional motivation and mental strength. Macci predicted that Alcaraz could secure at least two, and potentially three, Grand Slam titles by 2027, citing his mental fortitude.

Regarding recent play, Alcaraz has been working with his former assistant coach, Samuel Lopez. Following a recovery from a wrist injury, Alcaraz recently competed in the US Open, where he noted his primary goal was to test his physical response after a quarterfinal loss to Ben Shelton.
