Japan youth national football team developments

Overview

The Japan Football Association (JFA) has announced several initiatives regarding its youth national teams. In August, the JFA detailed a European tour for the U-16 national team, scheduled for October and November. In collaboration with UEFA, the team will play three international friendly matches in Cyprus against the national teams of Cyprus, Romania, and the Faroe Islands to provide players with experience against European playing styles.

By September, the JFA provided further updates on other age groups. Manager Takashi Yamahashi selected a 19-member roster for the U-17 national team for the International Youth Football in Niigata, noting the squad is similar to a ‘B-team’ as core players are involved in overseas tours. Additionally, Yusuke Miura was appointed manager for the U-15 national team ahead of their participation in the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival in Azerbaijan this October.
