Japanese game companies strategic diversification

Japanese video game companies Koei Tecmo and Konami are implementing strategies to diversify their development pipelines and mitigate financial risks associated with high development costs.

Koei Tecmo has outlined a plan to release six major PC and console titles alongside 19 mid-size titles by March 2027, aiming to reduce over-reliance on large AAA launches. Konami is similarly moving toward a continuous release schedule, funding multiple games and media projects concurrently rather than using single remakes as market tests.

Konami has further specified that its long-term business strategy will center on the reboot and revival of major intellectual properties, including Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Castlevania, and Suikoden. These franchises are viewed as “important initiatives” and “pillars” of the company’s business. To balance this focus on established IPs, Konami intends to maintain a portfolio that includes new titles and genres, such as eFootball and various mobile projects.

Building on this strategy, Konami President Hideki Hayakawa reaffirmed that revitalizing core franchises serves as a pillar for long-term growth, following the commercial success of the Silent Hill 2 remake and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. The company is expanding this pipeline with new titles such as the RPG Rev. NOiR and Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, which is scheduled for release on October 15, 2026. Konami continues to maintain a diverse portfolio including Yu-Gi-Oh!, eFootball, and various mobile and baseball titles.
