Japanese retail and food brand expansion
Overview
Japanese retail brands are expanding their presence in major urban markets. In late September 2026, Hashi Market, a New York-based supermarket chain, announced plans to open its first West Coast location in Cupertino, California, on October 9. The store, located in the Crossroads Center, was designed as a ‘mini department store’ featuring direct imports such as Hokkaido beef and seafood. Simultaneously, the sushi chain Sushiro announced a new branch opening in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong.
By early October, Hashi Market proceeded with its Cupertino opening in a former Sprouts location. The supermarket offers a variety of Japanese goods, including specialty products from Hokkaido, pantry staples, and beauty products, while also stocking other Asian and American brands. The company is also evaluating the rebranding of its existing locations, Marina Food Market in San Mateo and Marina Grocery in Milpitas and Union City, to the Hashi Market name.
