Jatiluhur Reservoir guard death response
Entities: Saepul Bahri Binzein · Sumarna · Imam Santoso · Purwakarta Regency · Indonesian police
Overview
On 26 July 2026 a 42‑year‑old security guard, Sumarna, was found dead, handcuffed and floating in the Jatiluhur Reservoir in Purwakarta, Indonesia. Authorities treated the case as a homicide after the guard reportedly confronted a group of youths planning to vandalise the water‑supply site. The Purwakarta regent, Saepul Bahri Binzein, ordered a comprehensive security review, calling for additional staff, CCTV installation and better lighting at the reservoir.
A few days later, on 30 July 2026, Perum Jasa Tirta II (PJT II) Director‑General Imam Santoso visited Sumarna’s family to deliver benefits from the BPJS Ketenagakerjaan program and a cash allowance from the company. The ceremony, attended by BPJS officials, PJT II board members and the regent, was presented as a commitment to protect workers’ rights and support the bereaved family’s living costs and children’s education.
