Jewelry thefts targeting tourists in Bali
Overview
Authorities in Bali are investigating incidents involving the theft of high-value jewelry from international visitors.
In mid-August, police arrested a 26-year-old man in Seminyak after he allegedly snatched a 25-gram gold necklace from an Indian tourist while riding a motorcycle. The suspect reportedly admitted to committing three similar thefts in the area.
In October, police launched an investigation into the theft of approximately US$10,000 worth of jewelry from a Chinese tourist during an excursion to Nusa Penida. The victim reported that a jewelry box containing rings, earrings, and an emerald bracelet was missing from a suitcase after the combination lock had been tampered with. Investigators are questioning witnesses, including a tour guide and a driver, to determine if the theft occurred while a travel vehicle was parked in South Denpasar.
