Jewelry trick theft warnings in Switzerland
Overview
Police in the Swiss canton of Solothurn issued a warning regarding approximately ten incidents of trick theft. Perpetrators, moving on foot or by vehicle, use a distraction technique where they attempt to hang inexpensive jewelry around a victim's neck to steal their actual valuables.
Following this, the Aargau Cantonal Police issued a similar warning. They reported that thieves approach victims under the guise of asking for directions before attempting to place fake gold chains around their necks to facilitate the theft of real jewelry.
Authorities in Luzern have also joined these efforts, alerting the public to a surge in these trick thefts. Law enforcement noted that perpetrators frequently target elderly individuals using pretextual interactions or physical contact to steal gold jewelry and other valuables.
