Johanneum Hospital power outage and evacuation

Overview

On August 28, 2026, a major power outage at the Johanneum Hospital in Wildeshausen, Lower Saxony, necessitated a large-scale emergency evacuation. The outage, which began around 9:15 a.m., required the transfer of critical patients, including pregnant women and highly vulnerable individuals, to surrounding clinics via ambulances and rescue helicopters.

Fire departments were deployed to manage fire protection after the power failure briefly disabled the hospital’s fire alarm system. Although emergency generators provided power to a small area, officials ordered a broad evacuation due to uncertainty regarding the outage's duration. No injuries were reported.
