Johor hospital staffing shortage

Overview

In early August 2026, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi drew attention to a chronic shortage of doctors and health staff at the newly opened Hospital Pasir Gudang, urging rapid measures to protect patient care. State officials, including the chair of the Johor Women, Family and Community Development Committee, defended the remarks as reflecting public concern, while a former Public Works chairman called for formal applications to the Ministry of Health and related agencies.

Later the same day, UMNO leaders in Johor reiterated the urgency, stressing that the staffing crisis is not a political stunt but a duty to ensure quality services. They highlighted state investments in facility upgrades, locum funding and welfare initiatives, and pressed the federal Ministry of Health, Public Service Department, Civil Service Commission and Treasury to translate commitments into concrete recruitment and placement actions for Hospital Pasir Gudang and other state hospitals.
