Legal proceedings follow José Antonio Neme traffic accident

Chilean television presenter José Antonio Neme was involved in a traffic collision in Las Condes involving a Mazda and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 30-year-old Venezuelan delivery worker, sustained injuries to his head, thorax, and limbs, including a leg fracture, and was hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities investigated whether a traffic light was disregarded during the incident. While security footage showed Neme’s vehicle was stationary at one point, investigations by the Fiscalía and Carabineros continued. Neme’s alcohol and drug tests were negative. It was also noted that the motorcyclist was undocumented and the motorcycle lacked proper documentation.

The incident led to public debate regarding the judicial response, as the prosecution issued a warning rather than detaining Neme. Legal experts questioned the consistency of this decision. Neme later addressed the accident on television, expressing vulnerability and reflecting on the fragility of life.

Following the accident, a criminal complaint was filed against Neme in the Fourth Guarantee Court of Santiago. The legal action seeks charges for quasi-delict of serious injuries and quasi-delict involving a motor vehicle. Neme previously admitted responsibility, stating he did not see the motorcycle and attributed the collision to a lapse in attention. Although Neme offered to cover medical expenses and provided immediate assistance, the victim's family has opted to pursue formal legal proceedings through a representative to manage indemnities and reparations. Neme confirmed the victim has been discharged from the clinic and that the legal process is moving forward with the involvement of insurance companies.
