Journalist attacks in Kano, Nigeria

Overview

Following an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Nigeria, suspected thugs armed with machetes and knives attacked a vehicle containing journalists and security personnel. The assailants targeted staff from Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM and Guarantee Radio, as well as three policemen, near the North West University City Campus. The attack resulted in injuries to the driver and several journalists who were struck by broken glass.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kano State Council condemned the incident as a “serious threat to press freedom.” In response, Ibrahim Ali Amin Little, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate, described the attack as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” Little criticized the use of thugs in political events and called for increased commitment from security agencies to eradicate political thuggery.
