Overview

The Media Union of Montenegro (SMCG) has raised alarms regarding a trend of attacks, threats, and pressure against media workers. In October 2026, the union condemned threats made against Vijesti photojournalist Boris Pejović in Podgorica. Following an incident where Boris Radosavović allegedly threatened to physically harm Pejović and damage his equipment, police arrested Radosavović. While the state prosecutor classified the actions as a misdemeanor rather than a criminal offense, the SMCG noted that 17 attacks on media workers had been recorded in the country since the start of the year.

By late October, the SMCG reported that the number of recorded incidents had risen to 18. These cases included seven targets of female journalists, five targeting men, and six directed at media groups or organizations. The union warned of a persistent culture of impunity, noting that while some cases are being processed by police or prosecutors, current penalties are often too lenient to serve as an effective deterrent.
