Judicial reform efforts in Guinea

Overview

Guinean Justice Minister Ibrahima Sory II Tounkara has initiated a national tour to evaluate and reform judicial and penitentiary services. During visits to the Kankan region, the Minister addressed issues regarding judicial efficiency, urging magistrates to accelerate case processing and reduce delays to prevent citizens from seeking private justice.

The Minister also denounced excessive judicial transport fees at the Kankan Court of First Instance, noting that disproportionate charges penalize impoverished citizens. To address this, Tounkara ordered the public display of official regulatory tariffs for administrative and judicial acts and warned that officials would be held accountable for failing to adhere to official decrees.

Parallel to the Minister’s efforts, the General Inspectorate of Judicial and Penitentiary Services conducted inspections in Kérouané, Beyla, and Lola to assess court functioning, staff working conditions, and the rights of detainees.
