Overview

In mid-August 2026, the Peruvian judiciary implemented measures to address workload and specialized crime. Initially, courts across the country participated in a national 24-hour extraordinary session to reduce case backlogs. This effort involved over 100 jurisdictional bodies, with the Superior Court of Justice of Arequipa recording the highest volume of procedural acts, including sentences and decrees.

Following this initiative, the Superior Court of Justice of La Libertad established Peru’s first specialized subsystem dedicated to combating organized crime, specifically targeting extortion and contract killing. This new inter-institutional model, effective August 19, utilizes specialized preparatory investigation and criminal courts to provide faster judicial responses.
