Jujuy tourism and aviation development
Overview
The province of Jujuy is implementing new strategies to enhance its tourism sector through aviation restructuring and long-term planning. Initially, the province introduced the ‘Sustainable Tourism Strategic Plan Jujuy 2035’, a roadmap featuring 21 programs and 71 projects focused on environmental sustainability and infrastructure across the Puna, Quebrada, Valles, and Yungas regions. This plan includes developments such as astronomical tourism and a ‘Solar Train’.
As the tourism sector grows, the province is overhauling its air connectivity. Following the termination of agreements with Flybondi due to continuous delays and cancellations, JOY Airline is set to establish a local base at Horacio Guzmán International Airport. JOY Airline has begun selling tickets for its upcoming regular routes, planning 12 weekly frequencies between Jujuy and Buenos Aires and 7 weekly frequencies between Jujuy and Córdoba. Utilizing Bombardier CRJ-200LR aircraft, the airline aims to target corporate and high-end segments with a focus on comfort and punctuality. Operations are expected to begin toward the end of September, pending final aeronautical certification.
Additionally, JetSMART is expected to resume daily service to Buenos Aires in October. These aviation shifts coincide with high tourism activity. A recent long weekend saw an 85.71% hotel occupancy rate—reaching 92.73% in the Valles region—with an economic impact of approximately 11.8 billion pesos. By October, official projections indicate Jujuy will have 47 weekly flights to Buenos Aires and 14 to Córdoba, operated by three different companies.
