Junior de Barranquilla appoints Sebastián Viera as coach

Overview

Junior de Barranquilla has officially appointed club legend Sebastián Viera as the new head coach, following the dismissal of Alfredo Arias. The decision to end Arias’s tenure was driven by a difficult start to the Liga BetPlay II-2026 season, where the team earned only two points in five matches and faced eliminations from both the Copa Colombia and the Copa Libertadores.

Arias’s departure marks the end of a historic period for the club; he was the first manager to achieve a “bicampeonato,” leading the team to consecutive league titles in Liga BetPlay II-2025 and Liga BetPlay I-2026. During his 74 matches in charge, he recorded 33 wins, 18 draws, and 13 losses.

In the search for a successor, the club reportedly approached Alberto Gamero, who declined the proposal due to a preference against taking over a season already in progress. Sebastián Viera, who holds the club record for most appearances with 638 matches, will lead the technical staff alongside his father, Mario Viera, and physical trainer Ramón Vásquez. Viera is expected to make his debut on September 5.
