Kai Tak Hospital phased operational rollout

Overview

Kai Tak Hospital in Hong Kong has officially commenced its first phase of operations in Kowloon Bay. This rollout is part of what officials describe as “the largest hospital relocation project in Hong Kong’s history,” involving a gradual transfer of services from Queen Elizabeth Hospital to the new 2,400-bed facility.

The initial phase focuses on the Family Medicine Integrated Centre, which now provides 350 general outpatient slots daily. Following this, specialist outpatient services—including surgery, neurosurgery, and clinical oncology—are scheduled to begin on October 26. On November 12, internal medicine services will be relocated from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with the objective of reaching 1,800 daily patient visits by the end of the year.

A second phase is planned for 2028. This stage will introduce major clinical services such as accident and emergency departments, in-patient care, surgical services, and specialties including paediatrics, orthopaedics, traumatology, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to serve over 1.8 million people.
