Kalamata urban and infrastructure development

Overview

The Municipality of Kalamata has initiated several large-scale urban regeneration and infrastructure projects. The first phase focuses on the Lyomena (Vagia) area in Eastern Kalamata, with a €7,760,000 budget aimed at transforming the 107-acre zone into a sustainable development model featuring roads, green spaces, and sports facilities. This is part of a larger €21,020,000 plan that also includes construction in the Old Camp area and at the Iroon & Mavromichali location.

Further development efforts include a proposal for Kalamata to participate in the ‘European Youth Capital 2027’ program to engage citizens aged 15 to 29. Additionally, the Municipality and the Peloponnese Region are advancing the construction of the Kalamata Regional Sports Center in the Paliambela area. This €20 million project is planned for a 45,068 square meter site and will include an indoor gymnasium, a swimming pool, and various sports courts. Funding for the sports center has been proposed through the Ministry of Interior’s Sectoral Development Program (2026–2030).
