Kano Governor Yusuf's development initiatives

In late July 2026, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf rolled out a series of economic and infrastructural measures aimed at boosting livelihoods and modernising the state. On 24 July, he awarded N55.8 million in grants to 1,116 informal traders and youth entrepreneurs, each receiving N50,000 to expand their businesses. This disbursement marked the second phase of the administration’s small‑business support programme.

A week later, on 30 July, Yusuf turned attention to larger‑scale projects. He met with finance officials and Mota‑Engil Nigeria to finalise preparations for the N1.05 trillion Kano Light Rail Project, a federal‑backed transport initiative intended to improve urban mobility and stimulate the regional economy. Simultaneously, he led a delegation to request the release of a ₦5 billion relief fund pledged for victims of the Singer Market fire, seeking urgent assistance for traders displaced by the disaster.

Together, these actions illustrate a broadening of Yusuf’s agenda from immediate cash assistance for informal traders to ambitious infrastructure development and disaster relief, signalling a comprehensive approach to economic growth and social welfare in Kano State.
