Kaohsiung extreme rainfall and disaster response

Overview

Kaohsiung experienced historic rainfall in August, totaling 1,712 mm. This amount broke the previous monthly record set in 1931 and accounted for approximately 93% of the city’s total annual average rainfall.

In response to the extreme weather, the Kaohsiung City Government established a Level 3 Heavy Rain Disaster Response Center. The Water Resources Bureau and various emergency response teams were deployed to manage flood control and disaster relief operations.

To mitigate economic impacts, the city government announced disaster relief measures specifically for the aquaculture industry. Mayor Chen Chi-mai secured central government approval to include all categories of aquaculture products in a cash assistance program. The Kaohsiung City Marine Bureau opened applications for relief from August 26 to September 8, following principles of “lenient determination and rapid processing” to assist farmers facing flooding, water quality deterioration, and fish escapes.
