Karim Benzema's professional future remains uncertain

Overview

Karim Benzema remains a free agent following his mutual departure from Al-Hilal after six months. While a sentimental return to his formative club, Olympique Lyonnais, was previously considered, the move has been blocked by his contractual obligations as a Saudi Pro League ambassador until 2030. These duties, involving promotional work and image rights, are deemed incompatible with playing for a professional club in another country.

Despite these constraints, new developments suggest a potential return to European football. Bayer Leverkusen has reportedly initiated contact with the 38-year-old striker to explore a transfer. Benzema has expressed interest in the German club’s project and has reportedly sought information regarding the team from former teammates Moussa Diaby and Lucas Vázquez.

However, significant financial obstacles persist, particularly regarding the high salary levels Benzema commanded at Al-Hilal. While Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, has addressed the speculation, the feasibility of the move remains uncertain.
