Katowice senior health and rehabilitation programs

The city of Katowice has launched its 2026 prevention program for elderly residents, an initiative that has been active since 2014. The program provides free diagnostic examinations and rehabilitation sessions to improve the quality of life for the city’s older population.

The 2026 edition targets specific age groups, including residents born in 1941 or earlier, 1947–1951, and 1962–1966. Medical screenings cover blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and TSH, alongside assessments of vision, hearing, memory, and physical mobility. Medical professionals interpret the results, and participants identified with health issues receive referrals for further diagnostics or treatment. The program also includes city-funded rehabilitation for those with mobility impairments.

On a national level, the National Health Fund (NFZ) manages preventive screening programs that allow eligible citizens to undergo comprehensive health assessments every three years. These screenings cover blood morphology, lipid profiles, and kidney function to detect chronic diseases early.

Recent developments in Polish senior welfare include the expansion of a free medication program for citizens aged 65 and older. While this expansion has increased the number of subsidized active substances, it has also resulted in a “substantial rise in budget expenditures” for the NFZ. Additionally, social integration efforts are being supported through various community events, such as senior weeks in Jaworzno and music festivals in Chorzów.
